Bend Memorial Clinic Cascade Cycling Classic July 11, 2007
The Toyota-United Pro Cycling Team executed its pre-race plan to perfection on Stage 1 by placing Heath Blackgrove in a nearly race-long breakaway. The strategy allowed teammates ? and potential race winners ? Chris Wherry, Chris Baldwin, and Justin England, Burke Swindlehurst to relax in the confines of the peloton.
When the break was finally reeled in less than six miles from the summit finish at Pilot Butte, Baldwin surged out of the pack to take second place on the stage behind Ricardo Escuela (Successfulliving.com presented by ParkPre). Wherry, England and Swindlehurst all finished in the top 12 within a minute of Escuela. The result put Toyota-United atop the team classification with five stages to go in the five-day National Race Calendar event.
